Shaping the Future of Credit Unions: Insights from Anthony Demangone & Jim Nussle
In this episode of Tips for Change, we sit down with two influential voices in the credit union movement—Jim Nussle, President & CEO of America’s Credit Unions, and Anthony Demangone, Chief Membership and Engagement Officer at America’s Credit Unions.
Together, they offer perspective on everything from federal regulatory shifts to the heart of what makes credit unions different: people helping people.
Navigating Change in D.C.—And Staying the Course
The episode kicks off by addressing the recent headlines out of Washington, D.C., about leadership changes on the federal level. While the news caught attention, Jim and Anthony share a calm and reassuring message: credit unions' core structure, safety, and member-focused mission remain unchanged.
Their reminder? Credit unions are people-first by design, which hasn’t changed, even in a shifting political environment.
The Real Regulation: Member Ownership
Jim outlines how the truest form of accountability comes not from government agencies, but from members themselves. Whether it's through annual meetings, board involvement, or grassroots advocacy, credit union members hold meaningful power—and that’s part of what keeps this model so distinct and trustworthy.
Rooted in Tradition, Driven by Progress
Anthony reflects on the resilience of credit unions through economic highs and lows—pointing out that while financial tools and platforms may evolve, the core motivation to serve members doesn’t. From humble beginnings to digital transformation, credit unions have always found a way to serve their communities without losing their heart.
Leadership, Legacy, and the Power of Listening
As Jim prepares for retirement, he shares what he’s most proud of in his career—and the values that have guided him: Listen. Learn. Help. Lead.
This people-centered approach to leadership has shaped his work at America’s Credit Unions and inspired many in the industry to lead with intention.
Why It’s Never “Just a Job” in Credit Unions
One message resonated throughout the episode? No one plans to end up in credit unions, but once they do, they stay. Whether it’s a teller, marketer, or CEO, people often “stumble in” and discover they’re part of something bigger than themselves. A movement rooted in cooperation, financial empowerment, and doing what’s right.
How You Can Make a Difference
Jim and Anthony wrap up with a call to action: lean in. Whether it’s serving on a board, joining a committee, mentoring others, or speaking up—credit unions thrive when their people get involved. That first step may seem small, but it can lead to big impact.
